MORFEM

(The smallest linguistic unit within a word that can carry a meaning, such as "un-", "break", and "-able" in the word "unbreakable")

Morfem was formed on July 17th, 2009 in Jakarta. “Morfem” is a term that is often found in linguistic studies, one that bedazzled Jimi while learning bahasa in middle school. An interesting term to be adapted as a band name. The word “morfem” also feature an interesting combination of letters that also serve aesthetical purpose from a graphic-design standpoint.

Morfem is a melting-pot of a few band members from many different genres. Jimi Multhazam (vocals) is the frontman to the phenomenal new wave band, The Upstairs. Pandu Fathoni (guitars) is the guitarist of The Porno, a post-punk band that features dark and gloomy sounds. Bramasta Juan Sasongko (bass) is also the bassist of JARB, an alternative/stoner-rock with a more modern sounds and arrangements. Freddie Alexander Warnerin (drums), who also plays drums on the hardcore band, Nervous breakdown is used to playing in faster tempo.

The four of them teamed-up in Morfem to make a different kind of music from each of their respective bands. Morfem produce a light and easy listening music with straightforward narrative-descriptive lyrics with everyday theme (according to Soleh Solihun, Rolling Stone Indonesia). Wrapped with friendly, yet noisy guitar sounds, zig-zagging bassline encouraging anyone who listen to dance with the humble drumming.

February 11th 2010 Morfem released their first single, “Gadis Suku Pedalaman” free to download in the internet. Hundreds of downloads are recorded daily of this single which are mixed by Joseph Saryuf (Sinjitos/Santa Monica). This single marks Morfem’s first step to accelerate in Indonesia’s homogenic music scene.

A new chapter of Indonesian music… Begins!
